Some recipes are just recipes. But others feel like home—warm, nostalgic, and capable of pulling you back to another time.
This German chocolate cake is one of those… just not for me.
It’s my mom’s favorite—something she remembers her own mom making when she was little. When I set out to perfect it, I wasn’t just chasing flavor. I wanted it to taste like memory for her. Familiar and comforting, but with a little more depth. The kind of cake that brings her back and makes her feel warm.
(I made 1/2 the recipe for this pic- makes two 6 inch layers!! :))
After a lot of testing, this version finally landed just right: a rich chocolate cake with a tender crumb, layered with the dreamiest coconut pecan filling. It’s rustic, as it should be—beautifully imperfect. A sweet nod to tradition, with tweaks to make it my own.
